How Many Watts Should a Hair Dryer Be?
Wattage is the number on every box and the wrong thing to shop on. Here is what it actually buys you, and what it costs to run.

The short answer: 1,500W is the practical minimum for a full-size dryer, 1,875W is the US convention and the ceiling for a standard household circuit, and above 1,800W the returns are small. But wattage measures electricity consumed, not air moved — and air is what dries hair.
Why 1,875W specifically
A standard US household circuit runs at 120 volts and is typically protected at 15 amps. Volts times amps gives 1,800 watts of continuous load, with a small allowance above it — which is why so many dryers land at exactly 1,875W. It is a circuit limit, not a performance target somebody chose.

What a blow dry actually costs
This is the calculation nobody in the category publishes, and it is simple enough to redo yourself with your own electricity rate.

What those numbers mean
AC versus DC is the one motor distinction worth caring about. AC motors are heavier and last longer, and they are the reason a salon dryer survives daily use while a drugstore dryer does not.
The 50-percent and 3x figures are Conair's own claims about their AC motor relative to a DC one, not independent measurements. Read them as the manufacturer's positioning, which is exactly what they are.
2.27 lb is heavy for a home dryer. If you hold a dryer overhead for fifteen minutes, that weight is a real ergonomic cost and the lighter high-speed dryers are worth the price difference.

What those numbers mean
Air speed and heat are two different ways to get water out of hair, and only one of them denatures protein. A dryer that moves air at 22.3 m/s can finish the job at a lower temperature, which is the whole reason this category exists.
0.9 lb is less than half the weight of the AC dryers it competes with. Over a fifteen-minute blowout on long hair that is the difference between finishing properly and giving up damp.

What those numbers mean
2,000W is unusual in the US market because household circuits and the 1,875W convention keep most dryers just under it. If your hair takes 25 minutes to dry, that extra power is the specification that shortens it.
A removable rear filter sounds trivial and is not. A clogged filter starves the motor, the dryer runs hotter to compensate, and the tool that was supposed to be gentle becomes the one that scorches. Filters you can actually clean last.
The four-year warranty is longer than almost anything at this price and is a reasonable proxy for how the motor is expected to hold up.

The specification that actually matters
Wattage is electrical input. What removes water from hair is air volume moved past it, and those are related but not the same — a dryer can convert a lot of electricity into a lot of heat while moving very little air, and it will dry slowly and hot.
The dryers that publish airflow are the ones telling you something useful. Dyson publishes up to 41 liters per second at 1,600W. Laifen publishes 22.3 m/s from a 110,000 rpm brushless motor and does not publish a wattage at all. Both dry faster than their wattage suggests, because the air is doing the work.
How many watts do you need?
- Fine or short hair: 1,200-1,500W is genuinely enough. Higher wattage is capacity you will not use.
- Medium hair: 1,500-1,875W. This is where most people should be.
- Thick or long hair: 1,875W and up, or a high-speed brushless motor. Session length is the thing you are buying down.
- Travel: 1,875W with dual voltage if you can find it — most travel dryers drop to 1,000-1,200W and roughly double the drying time.
- Any hair, if arm fatigue is your issue: weight matters more than watts. The Laifen at 0.9 lb against the Panasonic at 2.9 lb is a bigger practical difference than any wattage gap here.

Is a 2000 watt hair dryer better than 1875 watts?
Marginally faster on thick hair, and worth knowing that it draws about 16.7 amps at 120V — more than a 15-amp circuit is rated for. That is why almost every US dryer stops at 1,875W. If your bathroom circuit is shared, a 2,000W dryer is a plausible cause of a tripping breaker.
Does higher wattage mean faster drying?
Only partly, and this is the most useful thing on this page. Wattage measures electricity consumed; what removes water is air volume moved past the hair. A dryer that publishes an airflow figure is telling you more than one that publishes only watts.
Do high wattage hair dryers damage hair more?
Not directly — temperature and time are the mechanism, not electrical draw. A 1,875W dryer on low heat can be gentler than a 1,200W dryer on high. What high wattage does mean is a higher potential ceiling, which is why an unlabeled maximum setting on a powerful dryer is worth avoiding if your hair is fine or damaged.
