The Best Grooming Devices

Three different tools get sold as if they were interchangeable. They are not, and picking the wrong category is the most expensive mistake here.

Nothing on this page was supplied by a manufacturer, and commission plays no part in the ranking — read the full disclosure. Picks are chosen from published specifications, not from hands-on testing; the method is written down so you can check it.

Most grooming disappointment comes from buying the wrong category rather than the wrong model. A trimmer, a shaver and a clipper cut hair at three different lengths using three different mechanisms, and none of them does another one's job well.

The three categories, what each cuts, and what it cannot do
CategoryCuts toWhat it cannot do
Trimmer1 mm to 18 mm with guards, roughly 0.5 mm withoutA bare shave. It stops short of the skin by design.
Shaver (foil or rotary)Skin level, effectively 0 mmAny length longer than stubble. It has no guards.
Clipper1.5 mm to 25 mm with guards, adjustable at the close endFacial detail work. Too big, too powerful, wrong shape.

The Philips OneBlade sits deliberately between the first two, and that is worth understanding before you buy one: it trims, edges and shaves any length, but it does not give a bare-skin finish. If that is what you want, it is the wrong tool and no technique fixes it.

#1 · One kit that covers face, head and body

Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 (MG7750)

Twenty-three pieces and a five-hour battery, with self-sharpening blades Philips states stay sharp after five years. It is the widest coverage per dollar in grooming.

Published specifications for the Philips Norelco Multigroom 7000 (MG7750), each linked to its source
Contents23 pieces — metal trimmer, foil shaver, detail trimmer, nose and ear trimmer, extra-wide hair trimmer, plus 14 reinforced guardssource
BatteryLithium-ion, up to 5 hours of cordless use after a 2-3 hour chargesource
Quick charge5-minute quick charge for one complete trimsource
BladesDualCut, with 2x more self-sharpening blades stated to remain sharp after 5 yearssource
CleaningRinses clean under the faucetsource

What those numbers mean

Five hours of runtime is unusually long and changes the ownership experience: this is a tool you charge occasionally rather than one you find dead when you need it.

The five-year sharpness claim is Philips' own statement about their DualCut blades. It is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test, and we are quoting it as such.

Fourteen guards plus five attachments is the reason to buy a kit rather than a beard trimmer. If you also cut your own hair, this covers both jobs with one battery.

What it does well

  • Genuinely covers face, head and body in one purchase
  • Five-hour runtime and a five-minute emergency charge
  • Washable, which is the difference between a clean tool and a clogged one
  • No blade oil needed

What it does not

  • The foil shaver is a finishing attachment, not a real shaver
  • Twenty-three pieces is twenty-three things to store
  • Philips does not publish a cutting-speed figure for this model

Skip this one if: Skip it if you only maintain a beard. A dedicated beard trimmer will do that one job better and take up a fraction of the drawer space.

#2 · Stubble you actually want to keep

Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Face + Body (QP2834)

It trims, edges and shaves any length without ever giving a truly bald result, which is exactly right if the goal is stubble rather than skin.

Published specifications for the Philips Norelco OneBlade 360 Face + Body (QP2834), each linked to its source
Cutting speedFast-moving cutter at 12,000 cuts per minutesource
Blade360 Blade flexes in all directions to follow facial curvessource
Skin protectionDual protection system — glide coating plus rounded tipssource
Blade lifeBlade lasts up to 4 months of use; includes 2 bladessource
Replacement indicatorAn eject icon appears on the blade when performance may no longer be optimalsource

What those numbers mean

The OneBlade is not a shaver and Philips does not claim it is. It cuts close but not to the skin, which is why it suits a maintained stubble length and why anyone wanting a bare face will be disappointed.

A blade that lasts four months is a running cost, not a footnote. Two blades in the box is roughly eight months, after which this becomes a consumable-based tool like a cartridge razor.

Rounded tips plus a glide coating is the specific reason this is the sensitive-skin pick. Most irritation comes from blade edges catching skin, not from the cut itself.

What it does well

  • One tool genuinely covers trimming, edging and shaving
  • Rounded tips and glide coating, which is what sensitive skin needs
  • A wear indicator on the blade rather than a guess
  • Face and body version handles both areas

What it does not

  • Cannot give a fully bald shave, by design
  • Blades are a recurring cost roughly every four months
  • Philips does not publish a battery runtime for this model

Skip this one if: Skip it if you want a genuinely bare, close shave. The OneBlade is engineered to stop short of the skin and no technique will get you past that.

#3 · Flat-lying hairs a foil shaver usually misses

Braun Series 9 Pro Electric Shaver (9465cc)

The ProLift trimmer exists specifically to catch flat-lying hair, which is the one failure mode every foil shaver shares.

Published specifications for the Braun Series 9 Pro Electric Shaver (9465cc), each linked to its source
ProLift trimmerCaptures and cuts flat-lying hair using Sonic technology, stated to shave up to 10 percent fastersource
Sonic technology10,000 micro-vibrations per minute, delivering 40,000 cutting actions per minutesource
Flexibility40-degree flexibility to follow contourssource
AdaptationAutoSense reads and adapts to beard densitysource
HeadFlexible ProHead cuts 1, 3 or 7-day beardssource
Station5-in-1 Clean & Charge station charges, cleans, lubricates and driessource
Waterproof100 percent waterproof, wet or drysource

What those numbers mean

Flat-lying hair is the specific reason people give up on foil shavers. A foil has to lift a hair into a slot before it can cut it, and hairs pressed against the skin never get lifted. The ProLift trimmer is a mechanism aimed at exactly that.

The cleaning station is not a gimmick with a foil shaver. Foils clog with a paste of stubble and skin oil that a rinse does not remove, and a clogged foil shaves worse and pulls more.

The 10-percent-faster claim is Braun's own, relative to their own previous system. Read it as a within-brand comparison.

What it does well

  • ProLift trimmer targets the flat-hair failure mode directly
  • Cleaning station keeps foils performing, which matters more than it sounds
  • Adapts to beard density automatically
  • Fully waterproof, wet or dry

What it does not

  • Cleaning cartridges are a recurring cost
  • Foil heads suit uniform growth; multi-directional beards favor rotary
  • The station takes up real counter space

Skip this one if: Skip it if your beard grows in swirls and multiple directions. Foil shavers cut in a line, and no amount of contour flex fixes hair that is lying four different ways.

#4 · Long beards and anyone who hates blade heat

Brio Beardscape Beard and Body Trimmer

A ceramic blade Brio states is four times tougher than stainless, five speeds from 5,000 to 7,000 rpm, and a 1 mm to 18 mm range that actually covers a long beard.

Published specifications for the Brio Beardscape Beard and Body Trimmer, each linked to its source
BladeLow-friction ceramic blade, stated to be 4x tougher than stainless steelsource
SpeedsFive settings from 5,000 to 7,000 rpmsource
Cutting range1 mm to 18 mm, with stubble lengths between 1 mm and 1.9 mmsource
BatteryLithium-ion, up to 4 hours depending on speed settingsource
Guards1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 mmsource
DisplayLCD showing speed and battery, with oiling and cleaning indicatorssource

What those numbers mean

Ceramic runs cooler than steel because it conducts heat less readily. Blade heat is the usual culprit when a trimmer starts to feel like it is burning, so a cooler blade is a comfort specification, not a durability one.

An 18 mm top guard is genuinely long. Most beard trimmers stop around 10 or 12 mm, which means a full beard has to be scissor-trimmed instead.

Adjustable rpm is unusual and useful. Lower speed for detail work near the lip line, higher speed for bulk removal, and the LCD tells you which you are on.

What it does well

  • Ceramic blade runs cooler than steel
  • 1 mm to 18 mm range covers stubble through a full beard
  • Five adjustable speeds
  • LCD with oiling and cleaning reminders

What it does not

  • Ceramic is harder but more brittle, and a drop can chip it
  • Brio does not publish a cuts-per-minute figure
  • Priced above mainstream beard trimmers

Skip this one if: Skip it if you keep short stubble and nothing else. The long-guard range and adjustable speed are what you are paying for, and a basic trimmer covers a 3 mm stubble identically.

#5 · Cutting your own hair at home, properly

Wahl Elite Pro Corded High-Performance Clipper Kit (79602)

Ten metric-labeled guards and a taper lever, corded so it never fades mid-cut. This is the home haircut kit that behaves like a barber's tool.

Published specifications for the Wahl Elite Pro Corded High-Performance Clipper Kit (79602), each linked to its source
BladesSelf-sharpening precision stainless steel blades, stated to cut hair 40 percent fastersource
Motor15 percent more power than Wahl's PowerDrive premium motorsource
Guards10 attachment combs — 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22 and 25 mmsource
TaperAdjustable taper lever for fading and blendingsource
Kit contentsCorded clipper, 10 combs, blade guard, storage case, comb, scissors, cape, blade oil and cleaning brushsource

What those numbers mean

Corded is the right choice for a home clipper and the one people regret not making. A cordless clipper loses torque as the battery drops, and torque loss mid-cut is what produces the tug-and-skip that ruins a fade.

Guards labeled in millimeters rather than only by number is a real usability win, because the number system is eighths of an inch and nobody remembers that under pressure.

The taper lever is what separates a clipper from a beard trimmer. It lets you move between two guard lengths continuously, which is the only way to blend a fade without a visible line.

What it does well

  • Corded, so torque never drops mid-cut
  • Ten guards spanning 1.5 mm to 25 mm, labeled in millimeters
  • Taper lever makes actual blending possible
  • Full kit including cape, scissors and case

What it does not

  • Corded means a cable to work around on the back of your own head
  • The 40-percent and 15-percent figures are Wahl's own within-brand claims
  • Not designed for wet use

Skip this one if: Skip it if you only need to tidy a neckline and edges. A detail trimmer is smaller, cordless and far easier to control for that job, and this kit is more tool than the task needs.

#6 · Thick, dense growth in a single pass

Panasonic ARC5 Advanced 5-Blade Electric Shaver

A 14,000 cpm linear motor driving five blades to 70,000 cross cuts a minute — the highest published cutting rate here, which is what dense hair needs.

Published specifications for the Panasonic ARC5 Advanced 5-Blade Electric Shaver, each linked to its source
Motor14,000 cpm linear motorsource
Cutting rate5-blade system delivering up to 70,000 cross cuts per minutesource
BladesFive outer foils with ultra-sharp inner blades that capture, hold and cut whiskers at the basesource
MaterialsHypoallergenic stainless steel foils and blades to minimize irritationsource

What those numbers mean

Five blades means five chances per pass for a hair to enter a slot. That is the whole argument for a five-blade foil on dense growth, and it is why fewer passes are needed than with a three-blade head.

A linear motor holds its speed under load. Rotary-driven shavers slow down when they hit a dense patch, which is the moment they start pulling instead of cutting.

Hypoallergenic stainless steel is a materials claim about irritation, not a medical one. If your skin reacts to shaving, this is a reasonable variable to change but it is not a treatment.

What it does well

  • 70,000 cross cuts per minute, the highest published figure here
  • Linear motor holds speed under load
  • Five blades means fewer passes on dense growth
  • Hypoallergenic stainless steel foils

What it does not

  • Panasonic does not publish a battery runtime for this configuration
  • Five-blade heads are more expensive to replace
  • Wide head is awkward under the nose and along the jawline

Skip this one if: Skip it if your growth is light and you shave every day. A five-blade head is engineered for density, and on fine sparse stubble the extra blades add cost and width for nothing.

Foil or rotary: match it to your face, not the price

This is the shaver decision that matters, and it has nothing to do with which is better in general.

  • Foil shavers — Braun and Panasonic here — use oscillating blades under a perforated screen. They cut in a line, which suits flat planes and uniform growth direction. Generally closer on a flat cheek, and better for sensitive skin because the foil sits between blade and skin.
  • Rotary shavers — the Philips Prestige — use three circular heads that pivot independently. They handle multi-directional growth and curved faces better, and cope with longer stubble without pre-trimming.
  • The practical test: if your beard grows in swirls or you go several days between shaves, rotary. If your growth is uniform and you shave most days, foil.

The specification that actually differentiates

Cutting rate is the one number worth comparing across shavers, and unusually for this site the manufacturers do publish it. Panasonic's ARC5 states 70,000 cross cuts per minute from a 14,000 cpm linear motor. Braun's Series 9 Pro states 40,000 cutting actions per minute with 10,000 micro-vibrations. Philips' Prestige states up to 150,000 cutting actions per minute.

Blade material, and the running cost nobody mentions

  • Stainless steel — the default. Durable, needs oiling on a clipper, sharpens or replaces predictably.
  • Carbon steel — the Andis Master. Takes a sharper edge and holds it, and will rust if you do not oil and dry it. A professional's trade.
  • Ceramic — the Brio Beardscape. Brio states it is four times tougher than stainless and it runs cooler, which is the real benefit: blade heat is usually what makes a trimmer feel like it is burning. More brittle, so a drop can chip it.
  • Consumables — the OneBlade's blade lasts a stated four months and then needs replacing. That is a genuine ongoing cost and it belongs in the purchase decision, not in a footnote.

The sections

The clipper guard size chart is the reference worth bookmarking before your first home haircut, and beard trimmer versus electric shaver settles the category question in more detail.

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between a beard trimmer and an electric shaver?

Length. A trimmer cuts to a set length using guards, typically 1 mm to 18 mm, and cannot cut to the skin. A shaver cuts at skin level and has no guards, so it cannot leave a controlled length. They are not substitutes for each other, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category.

Is a foil or rotary shaver better?

Neither in general; it depends on your face and your routine. Foil shavers cut in a line and suit uniform growth on flatter planes, and the foil between blade and skin generally makes them gentler on sensitive skin. Rotary shavers pivot independently and handle multi-directional growth and longer stubble better. If your beard grows in swirls, rotary; if it is uniform and you shave daily, foil.

Can I use a beard trimmer to cut my hair?

For a short uniform buzz, sometimes — but a trimmer's blade is narrower and its motor is built for beard density, so a full head takes much longer and the motor works harder. A clipper has a wider blade, more torque and a taper lever for blending. The Philips Multigroom 7000 here includes an extra-wide hair trimmer attachment precisely because the standard head is not ideal for it.

Do I need to oil grooming blades?

It depends on the blade. Carbon steel like the Andis Master needs regular oiling and dry storage or it will rust. The Philips Multigroom 7000 is explicitly stated to need no blade oil. The Brio Beardscape has an LCD indicator that tells you when oiling is due. Check the manual for the specific tool rather than applying one habit to all of them.
