How We Pick

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty dryers. We have not tested any, and we say so. Here is what we do instead.

Every hair tool roundup that outranks this site pairs the word "best" with a testing credential. Good Housekeeping has a Beauty Lab and publishes hours. TechRadar says expert tested. Allure says according to its editors. Who What Wear says I tried both.

We cannot honestly say any of those things, so we do not. What follows is the alternative, in enough detail that you can re-run it and disagree with us on the specifics.

What we do not claim

These are categories where zero is the right number, and where a competitor claiming otherwise is making a claim we would rather not make than make falsely.

  • Units we claim to have tested: 0. No lab, no sample cupboard, no hands-on hours.
  • Sponsored placements: 0. No brand has paid for a position, a mention or a link.
  • Free products accepted: 0. No PR samples, no loans, no gifted units.
  • Manufacturer relationships: none. No brand reviews content before publication and no brand has ever been shown a draft.

What we do instead

  1. Compile published specifications from the manufacturer. Every figure on this site comes from the maker's own product page, spec sheet or manual, and every one is linked to that source on the page it appears. Currently 36 products carry cited specs drawn from 36 distinct sources.
  2. Compute what those specifications mean. Wattage into running cost. Amps into whether a dryer will trip a 15-amp circuit. Section count into how many heat events a styling session actually involves. The working is shown so you can redo it — see what a blow dry costs to run.
  3. Cross-reference stated temperatures against published damage research. A 450F maximum means something specific when the literature reports cortex damage from around 392F. That comparison is the single most useful thing this site does and it appears on the temperature chart.
  4. Read the manuals. Not the press release, not another publisher's summary of the press release.
  5. Track prices daily rather than typing them into a page. Competitor pages in this category routinely carry prices frozen for years. Ours come from a live layer and disappear rather than go stale.

How a pick is made

Ranking criteria differ by category, but the order of consideration is consistent across the site:

  1. Disclosure first. A manufacturer that publishes a temperature ceiling has told you something a manufacturer publishing only a maximum has not. We treat that as a criterion in its own right, not a tiebreak.
  2. Fitness for the stated job. A roundup for fine hair ranks on the temperature floor. A roundup for thick hair ranks on power and plate length. The same product legitimately places differently on two pages, and that is the point of organizing by hair type.
  3. Mechanism over marketing. A published mechanism — an oscillating nozzle, a flexing plate, a taper lever — beats a coating claim every time.
  4. Honest constraints. Weight, cord length, what is actually in the box. These decide whether a tool gets used and they are systematically under-discussed.
  5. Price, last. Considered against what the specification buys, never as a proxy for quality.

What disqualifies a product

  • It is discontinued or not reliably in stock.
  • The manufacturer publishes nothing beyond a wattage — on some pages, notably the damaged-hair rankings, this is an absolute bar.
  • A specification claim contradicts the manual, and the manufacturer has not resolved it.
  • It is a rebadged generic with no identifiable manufacturer documentation to cite.

When the specs and the consensus disagree

Sometimes published specifications say one thing and aggregated public reviews say another. When that happens we say so on the page and attribute the consensus as what it is — other people's reported experience, cited as such, never as ours.

We will not resolve a disagreement by quietly siding with the more flattering source. If a manufacturer publishes a figure that user reports contradict, both belong on the page.

How to check our work

Every specification row on every product carries a source link that goes to the manufacturer page it came from. Every calculation shows its formula and its inputs. Every guide has a sources section at the foot.

Two sources do a lot of work across the site and are worth naming here: published research on thermally treated hair for the damage thresholds, and the US Energy Information Administration for the electricity rate behind the cost arithmetic. Both are linked wherever they are used.

What this method cannot tell you

Being straight about the limits is part of the method rather than a caveat on it. A specification sheet cannot tell you:

  • How a tool feels in the hand, or whether the buttons are where your thumb expects them.
  • Whether it still works in three years. Nobody publishes a lifespan and we will not estimate one.
  • How loud it is, unless the manufacturer publishes a decibel figure — most do not.
  • Whether the customer service is any good.
  • Whether you personally will like it.

For those questions a hands-on review is genuinely the better source, and we would rather point you at one than pretend. What this method is better at is the part hands-on reviews routinely skip: what the thing actually does, measured in units, with the source attached.

How often this is reviewed

  • Prices: daily, automatically. Anything older than 48 hours disappears rather than showing a stale number.
  • Roundup pick lists: quarterly, and immediately if a pick is discontinued or goes out of stock.
  • Comparisons: quarterly, or whenever a new model in the comparison launches.
  • Guides: every six months, and immediately when a cited source figure changes.
  • This page: whenever the method changes, with the change noted.

Every page on this site shows both its publish date and its last-updated date. There are currently 67 content pages, plus the trust and utility pages.
