The Best Body Groomers

Every other grooming tool is judged on how close it cuts. This is the one category where what sits between the blade and your skin matters more.

How this page is funded: the buy links below are affiliate links, and Heat Index earns a commission on qualifying purchases at no cost to you. Nothing on this page was supplied by a manufacturer, and commission plays no part in the ranking — read the full disclosure. Picks are chosen from published specifications, not from hands-on testing; the method is written down so you can check it. Prices last verified October 23, 2026.

Body grooming is the only category on this site where the failure mode is not a bad haircut. Skin below the waist is loose, curved and moves under the blade, and the consequences of a tool that catches are immediate in a way they are not on a jawline.

So the ranking below is built on one question before any other: what physically sits between the cutting edge and your skin? Everything else — runtime, lengths, lights — is secondary to that, and every manufacturer here answers it differently.

How we judged this list

  1. What guards the blade. A rounded tip, a built-in guard, a foil, or a comb you have to remember to attach. This is the whole category and it is where the ranking is decided.
  2. Head geometry against a curved, loose surface. A flat head bridges across a crease and misses the middle of it. A V-shaped or flexing head follows the shape instead.
  3. Reach. Your back is genuinely harder to groom than the back of your own head, and exactly one tool here publishes an attachment for it.
  4. A stated waterproof rating, not the word waterproof. Most people do this in the shower. An IPX number is a specification; waterproof on its own is an adjective.
  5. Length range. Whether the tool can leave a deliberate length or only take everything down close, which is the difference between grooming and removal.

Philips Norelco Body Groomer 9000 (BG9480/50)

#1 · Reaching your own back, and hygiene between uses

Philips Norelco Body Groomer 9000 (BG9480/50)

A shaver head and a trimmer head on one body, a foldable back attachment and a UV cube to store it in. The most completely equipped body groomer here, and priced like it.

Published specifications for the Philips Norelco Body Groomer 9000 (BG9480/50), each linked to its source
HeadsDual-head system — a 2D shaver head for a close finish and a trimmer head for a styled lengthsource
Skin protectionTriple Protect shave system: pearl tips, a hypoallergenic foil and a skin guard to minimize irritationsource
Head movement2D flexing headsource
Lengths11 lengths from 0.2 to 7 mm, using an adjustable precision comb at 1 to 3 mm, an adjustable pivoting comb at 3 to 7 mm and an intimate combsource
ReachFoldable back attachment, stated to extend reach across the bodysource
RuntimeUp to 120 minutes on Li-Ion power, with no-oil bladessource
Wet useShowerproof, wet or drysource
StorageUV sanitizing cube included, for hygiene between usessource
WarrantyStated as up to 5 years, footnoted on the listingsource

What those numbers mean

The dual-head system is the real differentiator. Every other tool here makes you choose between trimming to a length and shaving close; this one ships both heads and lets the same handle do either.

A foldable back attachment sounds like a gimmick until you try to reach between your own shoulder blades. Reach is the constraint nobody markets and everybody discovers.

120 minutes is double the runtime of most of this category, which on a tool used for long sessions over a lot of surface area is the difference between one charge a month and one a week.

What it does well

  • Both a shaver head and a trimmer head in one tool
  • Foldable back attachment for genuine reach
  • 120-minute runtime, the longest here
  • UV sanitizing cube, which nothing else in this group offers

What it does not

  • The most expensive body groomer on this page
  • Philips publishes no motor speed or cutting rate
  • The UV cube is another object to find shelf space for

Skip this one if: Skip it if you only groom below the waist and never your back or chest. The reach attachment and the second head are most of what you are paying for, and a single-purpose groin trimmer costs half as much.

MANSCAPED The Lawn Mower 4.0 PRO

#2 · Below-the-waist grooming with a light on it

MANSCAPED The Lawn Mower 4.0 PRO

A rounded ceramic blade with a built-in guard, an LED light and wireless charging. The category-definer, with a footnote on its own safety claim worth reading.

Published specifications for the MANSCAPED The Lawn Mower 4.0 PRO, each linked to its source
BladeSkinSafe ceramic blade, rounded with a built-in guard — MANSCAPED notes SkinSafe technology does not guarantee cut protectionsource
LengthsTwo adjustable comb attachments covering 2 to 12 mmsource
ChargingUSB-C or wireless chargingsource
Power deliveryConstant rpm, stated to stop the blade slowing as the battery drainssource
Wet useIPX7 — protected against immersion in up to 1 m of fresh water for up to 30 minutessource
ExtrasBuilt-in LED light and a travel lock engaged by a 5-second presssource

What those numbers mean

MANSCAPED footnotes its own headline safety claim — SkinSafe technology does not guarantee cut protection — which is more honest than the marketing around it suggests, and worth repeating rather than burying.

The LED light is the feature people are sheepish about and then refuse to give up. You are working on a curved surface you cannot see well at an angle you cannot light properly.

Constant rpm as the battery drains is a real specification rather than a slogan: a trimmer that slows as it discharges pulls instead of cutting, and that is exactly where nicks come from.

What it does well

  • Rounded ceramic blade with a built-in guard
  • IPX7, with the rating stated rather than just waterproof
  • LED light for an area you genuinely cannot see
  • USB-C or wireless charging

What it does not

  • MANSCAPED does not serve an accessible spec page, so these figures come from the retail listing
  • No runtime figure published on that listing
  • Replacement blades are an ongoing cost the brand actively subscribes you to

Skip this one if: Skip it if you want one tool for your whole body including a close shave. This is built for below-the-waist trimming at a guarded length, and it is not a shaver.

Panasonic Body Hair Groomer (ER-GK60-S)

#3 · Getting into the places a straight head cannot

Panasonic Body Hair Groomer (ER-GK60-S)

A V-shaped head on an I-shaped handle, trimming as close as 0.1 mm. The shape is aimed squarely at the parts of the body other groomers cannot reach cleanly.

Published specifications for the Panasonic Body Hair Groomer (ER-GK60-S), each linked to its source
BladeWide-edge ultra-thin blade with rounded tips, trimming as close as 0.1 mm without irritationsource
Head shapeV-shaped head to maneuver into hard-to-reach areas such as the buttocks and groinsource
HandleI-shaped handle for controlsource
LengthsThree comb attachments for different lengthssource

What those numbers mean

0.1 mm is the closest published cut in this group, and it is the figure that separates a body groomer from a beard trimmer wearing a different label.

The V-shaped head is a genuine geometry answer rather than styling. A flat head bridges across a curved or creased area and misses the middle; a V follows it.

Panasonic publishes less here than it does for its shavers — no runtime and no motor figure on the product page — which is a real gap on a cordless tool.

What it does well

  • Trims as close as 0.1 mm, the closest published figure here
  • V-shaped head genuinely suited to creased and curved areas
  • Rounded blade tips stated to avoid irritation
  • The simplest tool here, with the fewest things to lose

What it does not

  • Panasonic publishes no runtime or motor speed for this model
  • Three combs is the smallest length range on this page
  • No light, no travel lock, no case

Skip this one if: Skip it if you want long guarded lengths for chest or leg hair. Three combs covers the short end well and nothing above it.

Gillette i7 Intimate Trimmer

#4 · The lowest price that still has a light and a lock

Gillette i7 Intimate Trimmer

A 100-minute runtime, an LED halo light and a charging stand for roughly half the price of the premium options. The value entry point to this category.

Published specifications for the Gillette i7 Intimate Trimmer, each linked to its source
CombsTwo attachable combs — one to reduce the risk of cuts and a 2 mm comb for an even finishsource
LightLED Halo Light for low-light and hard-to-see areassource
Runtime100 minutes of cordless use, with a charging standsource
Travel lockEngaged with a 3-second press and holdsource
GripShorter handle with rubberized grip padssource

What those numbers mean

A 100-minute runtime at this price is the specification that stands out, and it is close to double what several pricier trimmers publish.

Two combs is a narrow range, and it tells you the design intent: this is a tool for taking length off close and evenly, not for styling at a chosen length.

Gillette publishes no blade material and no waterproof rating on this listing, which are the two things you would most want to know about a tool used in the shower.

What it does well

  • 100-minute runtime and a charging stand
  • LED light and a travel lock at the lowest price here
  • Short rubberized handle built for awkward angles
  • A guard comb aimed specifically at reducing cuts

What it does not

  • Gillette publishes no waterproof rating on this listing
  • No blade material published either
  • Only two combs, both at the short end
  • Figures come from the retail listing rather than an accessible spec page

Skip this one if: Skip it if you shave in the shower. Without a published waterproof rating we cannot tell you it belongs there, and three of the alternatives on this page state one outright.

What each maker puts between the blade and you

The guarding approach, compared
ToolWhat protects the skinClosest published cut
Philips Body Groomer 9000Triple Protect system: pearl tips, diamond-shaped holes for skin doming, plus a guardNot published; a dedicated shaver head is included
MANSCAPED Lawn Mower 4.0 PRORounded SkinSafe ceramic blade with a built-in guard — footnoted as not guaranteeing cut protectionNot published; combs cover 2 to 12 mm
Panasonic ER-GK60Wide-edge ultra-thin blade with rounded tips0.1 mm
Gillette i7 IntimateA comb attachment stated to reduce the risk of cutsNot published; a 2 mm comb is the shortest included

Philips is doing the most engineering here, and the middle term is the interesting one: diamond-shaped holes that let skin dome slightly into the head rather than being pressed flat against a cutting edge. That is a foil-shaver idea applied to body skin, and it is why the 9000 leads this list.

Panasonic takes the opposite approach — no guard system, just a very thin blade with rounded tips cutting to a published 0.1 mm. That is the closest figure anyone here states, and it is a design that trades margin for closeness.

Reach is the constraint nobody markets

Ask anyone who grooms their own back and they will tell you the limiting factor is not the blade, it is the angle. Only the Philips publishes an answer: a foldable back attachment stated to improve reachability across the body.

The Panasonic's answer is different and also real — an I-shaped handle with a V-shaped head, which Panasonic states is for maneuvering into areas like the buttocks and groin. A narrow body you can rotate in your hand solves a different half of the same problem.

The two cheaper tools here solve neither. If your back is the reason you are shopping, that narrows this page to one pick very quickly.

Shower use, and the rating that is missing

Most people do this in the shower, which makes the waterproof rating a primary specification rather than a footnote. The disclosure across these four is uneven in a way worth knowing before you buy.

  • MANSCAPED publishes IPX7 and defines it: protected against immersion in up to one meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. That is a specification.
  • Philips publishes 100 percent showerproof, wet or dry, which is a clear statement of intended use.
  • Panasonic's listing describes it as fully waterproof for wet or dry use.
  • Gillette publishes no waterproof rating at all on its listing, which is why the value pick carries that as a con. We are not going to tell you a tool belongs in the shower when its maker has not said so.

Trimming to a length against taking it all off

These four split into two different products wearing the same category name, and buying the wrong one is the most common disappointment here.

What each tool is actually for
ToolLength rangeWhat it is built to do
Philips Body Groomer 900011 lengths, 0.2-7 mm across two adjustable combs plus an intimate combBoth — a trimmer head for length and a shaver head for close
MANSCAPED Lawn Mower 4.0 PRO2 to 12 mm across two combsTrim to a deliberate length, guarded
Panasonic ER-GK60Three combs, plus 0.1 mm guardlessTake it short, or very short
Gillette i7 IntimateTwo combs, shortest 2 mmTake length off close and evenly

The MANSCAPED has the widest guarded range at 2 to 12 mm, which makes it the most useful of the four if chest or leg hair is part of the job rather than only the groin. The Gillette's two combs are the narrowest, and that is the honest shape of a value pick — and those two tools are the ones most people are choosing between, so we put them head to head. If the job is the bikini line or legs rather than the groin, the women's body and bikini tools are a different product set with different published lengths.

The details that matter more than they should

  • A light. Both MANSCAPED and Gillette build one in, and it is the feature people are sheepish about and then refuse to give up. You are working on a curved surface at an angle you cannot light.
  • A travel lock. MANSCAPED uses a 5-second press, Gillette a 3-second one. A trimmer that switches itself on in a bag arrives flat and, occasionally, damaged.
  • Constant rpm. MANSCAPED states its blade does not slow as the battery drains. A trimmer that slows pulls rather than cuts, and pulling is where nicks come from.
  • Hygiene between uses. Philips ships a UV sanitizing cube, which nothing else here offers and which is a more considered answer than rinsing.

The first time, in order

Most of the bad outcomes in this category come from technique rather than from the tool, and the first session is where they happen. None of this is on a box.

  1. Trim dry, before the shower, not in it. Wet hair clumps and lies flat instead of standing into the blade, so a wet first pass takes longer and pulls more. Shower afterwards.
  2. Start with the longest comb you own, even if it is longer than you want. You can always take more off; the reverse takes weeks.
  3. Keep the skin taut with your free hand. Loose skin is what gets caught, and tension is the single most effective thing you can do that costs nothing.
  4. Move slowly and let the blade do it. Pressing harder does not cut closer, it presses skin into the cutting edge.
  5. Go guardless only once you know the tool, and only on a flat area first.
  6. Clean the blade after every use. All four of these clog with a paste of hair and skin oil, and a clogged blade drags rather than cuts — the AAD suggests cleaning an electric razor every five to seven shaves, and the full razor-bump and ingrown-hair guide covers the rest of what it publishes.

What none of them publish

  • A cutting rate or motor speed on the sources we cite, from any of the four. That is close to universal in this category.
  • Blade replacement intervals, though MANSCAPED sells replacement blades on a subscription and the rest sell them as parts.
  • A runtime for the Panasonic or the MANSCAPED on the sources we cite, where Philips publishes 120 minutes and Gillette 100.
  • A waterproof rating for the Gillette, which is the single most consequential omission on this page.

If what you want is a face-and-body tool rather than a dedicated one, the all-in-one kits include body combs, and the grooming hub sets out which of the three tool categories does which job.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best body groomer for men?

The Philips Norelco Body Groomer 9000, on published specifications. It is the only one here with both a trimmer head and a shaver head, the only one publishing a back attachment for reach, and its Triple Protect system - pearl tips plus diamond-shaped holes that let skin dome slightly - is the most engineered answer to the guarding question. If price matters more, the Gillette i7 has a light, a lock and a 100-minute runtime for roughly half.

Are body groomers safe for below the waist?

They are designed for it, and every tool here has some form of guarding - rounded blade tips, a built-in guard, or a comb stated to reduce cuts. What no maker will promise is that you cannot catch yourself: MANSCAPED footnotes its own SkinSafe blade with the line that the technology does not guarantee cut protection, which is the honest position. Go slow, keep the skin taut, and use a comb until you know the tool.

What length should I use for body hair?

That depends whether you want a groomed length or bare skin, and the tools differ. MANSCAPED covers 2 to 12 mm across two combs, which is the widest guarded range here and the most useful if chest or leg hair is included. Panasonic cuts as close as 0.1 mm guardless. Philips is the only one that does both properly, with a trimmer head for length and a separate shaver head for close.

Can you use a body groomer in the shower?

Check the specific rating rather than the word. MANSCAPED publishes IPX7 and defines it as immersion in up to a meter of fresh water for 30 minutes; Philips publishes 100 percent showerproof; Panasonic's listing states fully waterproof. Gillette publishes no waterproof rating on its listing at all, which is why we will not tell you its trimmer belongs in the shower.

Can I use my beard trimmer on my body?

Mechanically yes, and it is a worse tool for it. A beard trimmer is built for a firm surface you can see, with a blade geometry aimed at a jawline. Body groomers use rounded tips, guarding systems and head shapes built for loose, curved skin - and the ones here add reach attachments and lights for parts of the body you cannot see. The category exists for a reason.

How often should you replace a body groomer blade?

None of the four publishes an interval, which is a genuine gap when comparing running costs. What is published: MANSCAPED sells replacement SkinSafe blades and pushes them on a subscription cycle, and the others sell replacement heads as standard parts. Treat the blade as a consumable on any of them and budget accordingly.
