Fine hair straightens easily. That is the whole problem — because it means the iron that gets the job done is a low-temperature one, and almost nothing in the category is designed or marketed around a low temperature.

A 140F floor is the specification that makes this the fine-hair pick in its price class. Most cheap irons start at 250F or 300F, which is already too hot for hair that is bleached or breaking.

What those numbers mean

365F as a fixed target is a deliberate rejection of the specification race. It sits under every temperature the thermal-damage literature associates with cortex damage, and the tool simply will not let you go higher.

The interesting part is the 250-readings-per-second control loop. A conventional iron cools when cold hair hits it and then overshoots on the way back; a fast loop holds the number, which is why one pass at 365F can beat two at 400F.

What those numbers mean

Rigid plates only touch the outside of a section, so the hair in the middle needs more heat or more passes. Plates that flex to gather the section apply pressure across all of it, which is why the same style lands at a lower setting.

Whether you will ever use 140F is another question — but an iron whose range starts there gives you 200F and 250F as real, selectable options rather than the bottom notch of a dial marked LOW.

The ghd exception

Technique matters more here than the tool

What temperature should I straighten fine hair at?

Most stylists work in the 250-300F range for fine hair, and the American Academy of Dermatology's general guidance is to use the lowest setting that achieves the style. Published research reports cuticle degradation from around 302F, which puts that range right at the edge — so on fine hair, lower genuinely is better, and an iron that only starts at 300F is starting too high.

Is a 1 inch flat iron too big for fine hair?

No, and plate width is not really the fine-hair variable — temperature is. A 1-inch plate is the standard for a reason: it covers enough hair to keep pass counts down while still reaching a fringe and short layers. A 1.25-inch plate is the one to avoid if your hair is fine and short, because it cannot get near the root without touching skin.

Why does my fine hair look flat after straightening?

Usually pressure and root placement rather than heat. Fine hair does not need clamping force to contact the plate, and squeezing it removes the last of the natural lift. Start the pass an inch from the scalp rather than at it, and ease off the grip — the plates only need to touch the hair, not compress it.
