How to Prevent Heat Damage

Most heat damage advice is a list of vague habits. Here is what the published research reports happens at each temperature, and which changes actually matter.

Heat damage advice is usually a list of habits with no explanation of why any of them matters, which makes it impossible to know which ones you can skip. So this page starts with the mechanism.

What heat actually does to a hair fiber

A hair is a keratin fiber with a cuticle on the outside — overlapping scales like roof tiles — and a cortex inside, which carries most of the strength and the curl pattern. Heat affects both, at different temperatures.

The seven changes, in order of how much they help

  1. Never apply an iron to wet or damp hair. See above. This is not a preference and no setting makes it acceptable.
  2. Reduce frequency. Damage is cumulative. One fewer heat-styling day per week is a larger reduction in lifetime exposure than any temperature change.
  3. Reduce passes, not just degrees. Thinner sections and one slow pass beats three fast ones. If a section needs a second pass, the section was too thick.
  4. Lower the heat, raise the fan speed on a dryer. Air volume does most of the drying, so you lose little speed and drop the temperature considerably.
  5. Use a heat protectant. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a product to protect hair from heat alongside low or medium settings.
  6. Buy a tool that publishes its temperature. You cannot manage what you cannot see, and most of this category refuses to tell you.
  7. Cut damaged ends. Split ends travel up the shaft. Nothing seals them permanently and nothing regrows cuticle.

What those numbers mean

Four heat settings published as 212F, 176F and 140F plus cold is the disclosure the rest of the category refuses to make. It means you can pick a setting against a damage threshold instead of against a vague label.

Note where those numbers sit. Even the hottest setting, 212F, is below the 302F figure Shark names as its damage line and far below the temperatures at which the literature reports cuticle degradation.

1,600W is less nominal power than a US 1,875W dryer, and 41 l/s of airflow is how it compensates. Again: air speed, not temperature.

What those numbers mean

365F as a fixed target is a deliberate rejection of the specification race. It sits under every temperature the thermal-damage literature associates with cortex damage, and the tool simply will not let you go higher.

The interesting part is the 250-readings-per-second control loop. A conventional iron cools when cold hair hits it and then overshoots on the way back; a fast loop holds the number, which is why one pass at 365F can beat two at 400F.

ghd publishes percentage claims about stronger hair, more shine and color protection. Those are the manufacturer's own claims from their own testing, and we are not in a position to verify them, so treat them as positioning rather than data.

What those numbers mean

Three published temperatures on a blow-dry brush is close to unique, and the numbers are the reassuring part. Even the top setting of 230F sits below the 302F line and far below anything the thermal research associates with cortex damage.

950W is the lowest wattage of any brush here and, for hair that is bleached or fine, that is a feature. Less power means a slower dry and a lower ceiling, and slower is the safe direction.

0.85 lb is the lightest tool in this entire registry. On a twenty-minute blowout, that is the specification you will notice most.

How to tell if your hair is already damaged

  • It absorbs water instantly. High porosity means the cuticle is not sealing, which is usually damage.
  • It stretches and does not return when pulled gently while wet. Healthy hair has elasticity; damaged hair snaps or stays stretched.
  • The ends look different from the roots in texture, not just in color.
  • It tangles more than it used to. Raised cuticle scales catch on each other.
  • Curls have loosened permanently and do not return after washing. That is disulfide damage, and it is not reversible.

What cannot be fixed, stated plainly

Nothing regrows cuticle. Nothing repairs a denatured cortex. Bond-building treatments and conditioners improve how the remaining structure behaves and feels, and that is genuinely worth doing — but the honest framing is damage limitation, and damaged length has to grow out.

Anything marketed as repairing heat damage is describing a cosmetic improvement in how the fiber behaves, not a structural restoration. That distinction is worth holding on to when reading product claims.

At what temperature does heat damage hair?

Published research reports cuticle degradation beginning around 150C (302F) and cortex damage from around 200C (392F), with melting and denaturation of the alpha-helix reported in the 220-250C range. Crucially, WET keratin denatures between 120C and 150C — far lower than dry — which is why applying an iron to damp hair is categorically worse than anything else.

Can heat damaged hair be repaired?

Not structurally. Nothing regrows cuticle or repairs a denatured cortex. Bond-building treatments and conditioners improve how the remaining structure behaves and feels, which is worth doing, but the damaged length has to grow out. Any product described as repairing heat damage is describing a cosmetic improvement rather than a structural one.

Does blow drying damage hair?

Far less than an iron does. Dryers on this site publish maximums of 212F to 230F, well below the roughly 302F at which cuticle degradation is reported. Most blow-dry damage is mechanical — fast air lifting cuticle scales — rather than thermal, which is why lower fan speed and better direction help more than lower heat does.

What is the single best thing I can do to prevent heat damage?
