A 4C strand changes direction many times along its length. Each of those bends is a point where the cuticle sits naturally raised and the fiber is structurally weakest — and it is also a place where water gets trapped inside the coil rather than evaporating from a surface.

What those numbers mean

A stated ceiling of 230F is the single most useful specification on any dryer, and almost nobody publishes one. It puts the airflow well under the 302F figure Shark itself names as the damage line and far under the cuticle-degradation range in the research.

Compare that with the usual disclosure. Most dryers publish wattage and a number of heat settings and never say what those settings actually reach, which makes the whole category impossible to compare on the axis that matters for damage.

What those numbers mean

Plate length is the specification nobody markets and everybody should. Five inches of plate covers more hair per pass, which means fewer passes, which is the only heat-damage variable fully in your control.

Tension drying versus the comb attachment

Porosity changes the settings

Porosity describes how readily the cuticle lets water in and out, and on coily hair it changes the drying problem more than curl pattern does. Low porosity hair resists water going in and coming out, takes longer to dry, and benefits from warm air and patience. High porosity hair — often color-treated or heat-damaged — absorbs and releases fast, dries quickly, and needs the lowest setting available.

The quick test: if your hair takes an unusually long time to get properly wet in the shower, you are probably low porosity and a slightly warmer setting is helping rather than hurting.
