The short answer, before anything else: most hair straightens between 250F and 400F, and almost nobody needs 450F. The chart below breaks that down, and then the section under it explains what the published research says about where the cost starts.

What those numbers mean
365F as a fixed target is a deliberate rejection of the specification race. It sits under every temperature the thermal-damage literature associates with cortex damage, and the tool simply will not let you go higher.
The interesting part is the 250-readings-per-second control loop. A conventional iron cools when cold hair hits it and then overshoots on the way back; a fast loop holds the number, which is why one pass at 365F can beat two at 400F.
ghd publishes percentage claims about stronger hair, more shine and color protection. Those are the manufacturer's own claims from their own testing, and we are not in a position to verify them, so treat them as positioning rather than data.

What those numbers mean
Rigid plates only touch the outside of a section, so the hair in the middle needs more heat or more passes. Plates that flex to gather the section apply pressure across all of it, which is why the same style lands at a lower setting.
Three published temperatures is the disclosure that matters, and 330F is a genuinely usable low setting rather than a token one.
Cordless is a convenience feature with a real cost: a battery has a runtime and a lifespan, and both are finite in a way a cord is not.

What those numbers mean
A 140F floor is the specification that makes this the fine-hair pick in its price class. Most cheap irons start at 250F or 300F, which is already too hot for hair that is bleached or breaking.
Eight sensors across two plates is a real design choice, not a coating claim. Sensors are how an iron notices that a cold, wet section has dragged the plate temperature down, and how it avoids overshooting on the recovery.
Curved edges mean the same iron can bend a curl instead of only flattening. On short hair especially, that turns one tool into two.

What those numbers mean
A 375F ceiling is the quiet advantage. It is high enough to set a curl on almost any hair and low enough that the worst-case setting is not catastrophic, which is not true of the 455F irons.
Publishing a settings-to-hair-type map on the product page is genuinely useful and almost unheard of. It converts an abstract dial into instructions.
The five-foot cord is the shortest here by a wide margin, and it will decide where you can stand.

Why the setting on the dial is not the temperature on the hair
A cheap iron set to 350F does not sit at 350F. When a cold section of hair hits the plate, the plate cools; the heater compensates and overshoots on the way back. The actual exposure swings around the set point, sometimes by a considerable margin.
Which is why sampling rate is a temperature specification. ghd publishes 250 readings per second, Dyson publishes 100 on the Corrale, HSI publishes eight sensors across two plates. An iron holding 365F precisely can be gentler than one nominally set to 330F and swinging.
Passes matter more than degrees
If you change one thing after reading this page, change how many times you go over each section. Total exposure is temperature multiplied by contact time multiplied by passes, and passes are the term most under your control and the one most people ignore.
- Thinner sections. No thicker than the plate can heat through, which is about a quarter inch on coarse hair.
- One slow pass beats three fast ones, at any temperature.
- If it needs a second pass, the section was too thick or the hair was not fully dry. Raising the temperature is the wrong fix.
- Longer plates cover more per pass. The BaBylissPRO's published 5-inch plates are the clearest example on this site.

What temperature should I straighten my hair at?
Fine, thin or bleached hair generally straightens at 250-300F; healthy fine hair at 300-330F; medium hair at 330-370F; thick or coarse hair at 370-390F. Published research reports cuticle degradation beginning around 302F and cortex damage from around 392F, so the upper ranges carry real cost and 450F is above every threshold in the literature.
Is 450F too hot for hair?
It is above every threshold reported in the published research — cuticle degradation from around 302F, cortex damage from around 392F, and melting and denaturation of the alpha-helix reported in the 220-250C range which begins at 428F. That setting exists to win a spec-sheet comparison. If your hair needs 450F to straighten, the section is almost certainly too thick or not fully dry.
What temperature should I use on fine hair?
250-300F if it is bleached or fragile, 300-330F if it is healthy. The practical problem is that most irons will not go that low — many start at 300F, which is already the top of that range. The HSI Glider publishes a 140F floor, which makes 250F and 280F genuinely selectable rather than the bottom notch of a dial.
Can I straighten damp hair on a low setting?
No. Wet keratin is reported to denature between 120C and 150C, which is 248F to 302F — far lower than dry keratin. Even a low setting on a flat iron is operating in or above that range, so damp hair is a categorically different risk rather than a matter of degree. Dry completely first, every time.
Why does my hair need higher heat than the chart says?
Usually one of three things, and none of them is that your hair is different. The sections are thicker than the plate can heat through; the hair is not completely dry; or the iron's actual temperature is swinging below its set point because it lacks a fast control loop. Fix the section thickness first — it is free and it is the most common cause.
