The attachment on the end of a dryer changes the result more than the heat setting does, and it is the part of the purchase most people never check. A premium dryer with the wrong attachment set will disappoint you; a mid-market dryer with the right one will not.

What those numbers mean
AC versus DC is the one motor distinction worth caring about. AC motors are heavier and last longer, and they are the reason a salon dryer survives daily use while a drugstore dryer does not.
The 50-percent and 3x figures are Conair's own claims about their AC motor relative to a DC one, not independent measurements. Read them as the manufacturer's positioning, which is exactly what they are.
2.27 lb is heavy for a home dryer. If you hold a dryer overhead for fifteen minutes, that weight is a real ergonomic cost and the lighter high-speed dryers are worth the price difference.

What those numbers mean
Most heat damage from a dryer is not about the setting, it is about holding the nozzle in one spot. An oscillating head spreads the same energy over a wider area, which is a mechanical fix for a technique problem.
The 1,000x moisture claim is Panasonic's own description of nanoe versus conventional ions. It is a manufacturer claim about their own technology, and we are quoting it as that rather than endorsing the number.
2.9 lb is the heaviest dryer here by a clear margin. Everything the oscillating head gains you costs something in the wrist.

What those numbers mean
A stated ceiling of 230F is the single most useful specification on any dryer, and almost nobody publishes one. It puts the airflow well under the 302F figure Shark itself names as the damage line and far under the cuticle-degradation range in the research.
Compare that with the usual disclosure. Most dryers publish wattage and a number of heat settings and never say what those settings actually reach, which makes the whole category impossible to compare on the axis that matters for damage.
The RapidGloss finisher is a separate attachment for flyaways on already-dry hair, not a drying head. Treat it as a finishing step, not a reason to buy.

The concentrator does more than it looks like
Cuticle scales lie in one direction along the hair, root to tip, like roof tiles. Air blown against them lifts every one; air blown along them lays them flat. A flat cuticle reflects light, which is what shine is.
That is the entire reason a blowout looks glossy and rough drying does not, and it is why the concentrator is not optional for a smooth finish. Narrower is better for precision; wider covers more hair per pass. The Drybar Buttercup ships two widths for exactly this reason.
The diffuser is not a nice-to-have
A diffuser does two things simultaneously. The prongs hold the curl away from the dryer body so it dries in its own shape rather than being pulled straight, and the wide vented surface drops the air velocity dramatically while keeping the air volume.
Same amount of air, spread over a much larger area, arriving much more slowly. That is why a modest dryer with a good diffuser beats an expensive one without it on curly hair, and it is worth checking the box before you buy — several premium dryers ship two concentrators and no diffuser at all.
The comb attachment, with the caveat
Comb and pik attachments stretch coily hair mechanically while it dries and they genuinely save time. They also apply concentrated tension directly against the bends where coily hair is structurally weakest, on a fiber that is wet and at its most vulnerable.
Plenty of people use them without problems. If you are seeing breakage, that attachment is the first variable to change rather than the last — tension drying by hand achieves the same stretch with less concentrated force.
What you should actually check before buying
- Does it come with a diffuser? If you have any curl pattern, this decides the purchase. The Conair InfinitiPro and Panasonic nanoe both include one; the Drybar Buttercup does not.
- Does it come with a concentrator? Almost all do, but check the width — a wide one is useless for precision work near a fringe.
- Are the attachments proprietary? High-speed dryers often use magnetic fittings that nothing else fits, so a lost attachment is a real problem.
- Can you buy the missing one separately, and at what price? Sometimes the missing diffuser costs more than the price gap to a dryer that includes one.

Can I use any diffuser with any hair dryer?
Not reliably. Barrel diameters vary and high-speed dryers frequently use proprietary magnetic fittings that nothing else fits. Universal diffusers exist and generally fit less well than the manufacturer's own, so check whether the dryer you are buying includes one before assuming you can add it later.
